Thomas D. Jarvi, Ph.D.
Director, Flow Battery Program
Lockheed Martin Corp.
Tom Jarvi currently serves as the Director, Flow Battery Program for Lockheed Martin Corp. In this capacity, Tom has overall operational responsibility for development and commercialization of the Company’s Flow Battery product. The GridStar® Flow system uses coordination-chemistry based electrolytes to achieve cost-effectiveness and safety attributes not available in existing batteries or incumbent flow batteries. The technology underlying GridStar® Flow was acquired by Lockheed Martin from Sun Catalytix Corporation in 2014. Tom joined Lockheed Martin following its acquisition of Sun Catalytix. Tom served as CTO of Sun Catalytix from 2010 to 2014, where he focused on technology strategy and program execution. Tom’s team developed the coordination chemistry flow battery and established it as the commercial path for the Company under his leadership. Prior to Sun Catalytix, Tom served in key engineering leadership positions at United Technologies, including as the Director of Technology Development at UTC Power Corporation. At the time, UTC Power was a world leader in fuel cell technology and deployment. During his time with United Technologies (1998-2010), Tom was intimately involved in extending fuel cell life time, and developing and commercializing transportation and stationary fuel cells with record-setting endurance.
Tom received his B.S. from the University of Illinois and his Ph.D. from the University of Washington, both in Chemical Engineering.
